The natural choice for health cover
HMAS Cairns personnel turned out
to farewell CMDR Wendy Bullen
and welcome new CO CMDR
Anthony Powell on February 12.
CMDR Bullen said she would
always remember the outstanding
community support between Cairns
and Far North Queensland.
“Support to this area after the
devastation of tropical cyclone
Yasi created a foundation that will
service the community in any state
emergency situation,” she said.
CMDR Bullen’s commitment
and dedication to supporting a num-
ber of community engagements and
charity drives also raised a large
amount of funds and, under her
command, Cairns participated in
the first Freedom of Entry march
through Cairns in 10 years.
During her two years at the helm,
Cairns was awarded the Governor’s
Cup in April 2011 by Queensland
Governor Penelope Wensley.
The Cup is awarded for profi-
ciency in administration, manage-
ment, operational support, training
“The highly dedicated and pro-
fessional group of men and women
at Cairns have made my job really
enjoyable,” CMDR Bullen said.
“The CO’s role is certainly one of
the highlights of my career.”
CMDR Bullen will go on to
assume a Defence position as the
project manager for a health capabil-
ity project in Brisbane.
New CO Cairns CMDR Powell
said he aimed to continue to provide
community support to the Far North
Queensland and Cairns communi-
“We will do this by not only sup-
porting a large number of charity
events, but by ensuring personnel
serving on board Cairns continue to

“It was great seeing the kids again,
and seeing that they had put into practice
the tips I gave them last year,” he said.
“Any little thing we can do for them
is better than nothing at all. It is amazing
how much progress they have been able
to make without any regular tuition.”
The initiative followed the band’s visit
to the school in October last year, when
students and staff were blown away by
the professionalism and generosity of the
musicians who helped them with their
instrumental skills, performed with the
school’s drumming groups and held a
concert for the Hillston community.
Hillston has a population of only 1052
and has no music teachers. Parents keen
for their children to have the opportunity
to discover music run the band program
with limited musical knowledge.
Before calling in on Hillston, the
Navy Band had already become regular
visitors at two other schools sponsored by
ACMF in Sydney: Soldiers’ Settlement
Public School at Matraville and Our Lady
of Mt Carmel School at Waterloo.
The ACMF programs are designed to
bring joy and inspiration to the lives of
disadvantaged young people.
The second video teaching session
will be held on March 27.
