HMAS Tobruk returned to Fleet Base
East on November 25 after a two-
month South-West Pacific deploy-

off New Caledonia before again prov-
ing her amphibious force in the bilat-
eral Exercise Pae Tata off the coast of
Auckland in New Zealand.

November 5-15, successfully exer-
cised NZDF elements in operational
level planning and tactical level exe-
cution of amphibious operations.
"Tobruk's participation in Pae Tata
was fundamental in developing the
joint aspects of the NZDF amphibious
capability," LTCOL King said.
"Tobruk provided the necessary
platform for the 1RNZIR HQ element
and embarked land elements to oper-

members, new and old, to reacquaint
themselves with conducting daily
amphibious evolutions and Croix du
Sud allowed us to put those skills to
use and strengthen them in an exten-
sive international environment.
"Pae Tata gave us the opportunity
to share our amphibious experience
and polished skills with our New
Maritime, land, intelligence, sur-
veillance and reconnaissance assets
took part in force integration training
and a free-play advance force-field
training exercise, which enabled the
Special Forces Task Element and Task
Group to effectively carry out their

work, stern-door marriages, craning
operations for foreign vehicles and
equipment were carried out on board
Tobruk as part of the NZDF amphibi-
ous operations familiarisation process.

Amphibious operations were con-
ducted by day and night, overt and
covert, and a tactical withdrawal of
embarked forces and reconstitution
phase was also practised.
During the exercise, Tobruk also
provided assistance to HMNZS
Otago's workup, conducting a night
steaming in company, which gave
Tobruk's junior warfare officers expe-
rience in tactical situations.
HMNZ Ship's Manawanui and
Taupo also participated in the exercise.
