WHEN LEUT Konrad
Streher was nominated by
a sailor at RAN Tactical
Section (RANTEWSS) as a candidate
for the Power FM 'Boss of the Year'
award he thought someone was "hav-
ing a lend".
But when LEUT Streher won in the
category of defence and emergency
services, he realised how greatly his
staff appreciated his leadership style
and philosophy in the workplace.
"When my CO informed me of
the nomination I was stunned and
humbled as well as more than a little
bemused," he said.
The award certificate describes his
leadership ability as XO RANTEWSS
based at HMAS Albatross.
"LEUT Streher has been in his
position for three years and in that
time has shown great leadership and a
levelled approach to all that he under-
takes," the award said.
"Perhaps best known for his 'kick-
ass demeanour,' LEUT Streher leads
by example with charisma and style.
"LEUT Streher stands out for Boss
of the Year 2012 for the care shown
to meet the needs of those who work
under him, even creating possibili-
ties for others that were not previously
LEUT Streher was presented with
his award at the Nowra business com-
munity awards on September 27,
ahead of LEUT Tim Forge of the NAS
Weather and Oceanography Centre,
and several contenders from the Rural
The Oberon-class submarine vet-
eran said his success in the awards
reflected Navy values and his leader-
"Mentoring has reinforced to me
that all decisions no matter how small
require fairness, transparency and rig-
our as there are invariably flow-on
effects that may have significant rami-
fications on my people, their families
and, in the longer term, on the work-
place," he said.
"The onus as leaders and managers
is to find that delicate and ever shifting
balance between productivity, fiscal
constraints, reputation management
and personnel needs and expectations."
Regardless of assets and holdings,
he said people were far and away
Navy's greatest resource.
"The challenge is to continue to
seek out opportunities that not only
develop and support your colleagues,
but inspire them to greater dreams and
achievements than they thought them-
selves capable of," he said.
LEUT Streher said he was fortu-
nate to be in a position where he repre-
sented a group of highly skilled, moti-
vated, professional people
"Our sailors do this not for finan-
cial gain or awards but because it is a
reflection of who they are and what
they do," he said.
"Without the tireless efforts and
support of all of the sailors, NCOs, fel-
low officers and civilian staff, we could
not have achieved what we have."
LEUT Streher, whose son is XO
AUSCDT-Four, joked that although
he was a category Boss of the Year his
wife, Donna, provided reality checks
which reminded him that at home he
was definitely not the boss.
