FLAT OUT: LCDR Gary Lewis and SBLT Sven Howarth compete on the range at Mt Hotham during the
ADF Nordic Skiing and Biathlon Championships.
A SMALL yet competitive team of Navy personnel
came close to an upset win in the interservice Nordic
Skiing and Biathlon Championships at Mt Hotham.
Three points was all that separated Navy and Army
at the end of the competition with the overall result
decided by the final race.
Not even another stellar effort by LCDR Wendy
Hughes could push the team of eight to overall glory,
but it wasn't for want of trying.
"We had a large number of late withdrawals due to
work commitments but the team that went did extraor-
dinarily well as there were a number of inexperienced
competitors in the team," LCDR Hughes said.
Navy took out the novice and women's divisions
of the championships, held from July 29 to August 12,
with LCDR Hughes claiming the title of ADF Women's
Biathlon and Nordic Skiing Champion for the second
year in a row.
"All three teams had experienced female competi-
tors so no races were easy to win," LCDR Hughes said.
"My results were similar to last year so I'm relieved
to have had two good years in a row.
"I don't think I'm unbeatable, but being able to
prepare in civilian races at Perisher in the lead-up to the
competition I think certainly helped.
"The rest of the Navy women's team also performed
really well, combining steady shooting with strong skiing
for a comfortable win in the women's championship."
While she was excited by her win, LCDR Hughes
said the event really belonged to the newcomers who
performed above expectation.
"The highlight for me was the courageous efforts of
the novices," LCDR Hughes said.
LEUT Scott Reynolds, LEUT Victoria Jintova,
LSMT Jason Chamberlain, SBLT Sven Howarth,
ABCK Nathan Glover and SMN Alon Brasington,
combined to claim victory by pipping Army in a novice
competition by just one point.
The novice men particularly enjoyed the team mili-
tary patrol event.
"Winning the novice men's patrol was the sweetest
victory; our Navy team came up against tough competi-
tion from Army who fielded three teams against our
one," LEUT Reynolds said.
"By the end of the half-day event, which included
shooting supported and unsupported, initiative activi-
ties and navigation exercises, the Navy team had beaten
all the other RAAF and Army teams to gain maximum
championship points, which was a huge effort."
NAVY cross-country skiers competed in
the Kinetics Cup on August 25 in Falls
Creek in Victoria and the Kosciusko Tour
at Perisher in NSW on September 2.
Army and Navy competed in the
Kinetics Cup where two skiers race 42km,
two skiers race a minimum of 21km and
one team member should be a female.
CDRE Mark Purcell and LCDR Garry
Lewis both skied the 42km with LCDR
Wendy Hughes and SBLT Chris Sporer
taking on the 21km legs.
"It was a tough event with strong
winds and it was also snowing," LCDR
"But Navy won and I came 12th out
of a possible 136 female competitors and
won my age group so it was worth it."
Navy entered two teams in the
Kosciusko Tour with Army also entering
"This event is the oldest interservice
cross country skiing event, being first con-
tested in 1977," LCDR Hughes said.
The Tour was a tough course from
Perisher to Charlotte's Pass and back
through the back country covering 18km.
CDRE Purcell, SBLT Howorth and
LCDR Hughes combined to take out the
event for the eighth year in a row.
"All services have dominated at some
stage and it's Navy's turn and it just
capped off a great year."

Fellow beginner LSMT Chamberlain said winning
was a bonus but being part of a team was just as impor-
tant to him.
"As a newcomer, it is simply awesome to enjoy the
snow and the team spirit," LSMT Chamberlain said.
Other standout performers included CDRE Mark
Purcell, LCDR Garry Lewis and CPOET Tony
Burchill, who delivered another solid year of results.
"LCDR Lewis was the best shot in the Navy team
and he consistently skis in the top three males and gives
Army's MAJ Fil Likar [ADF male champion] a good
run for his money," LCDR Hughes said.
