HMAS Ballarat has completed a suc-
cessful patrol through the north-western
oil and gas fields of Australia in support
of Operation Resolute.
Ballarat provided an overt presence
and enhanced the security of Australia's
important offshore oil and gas fields.
"I've done this on several occasions
now and most of the time you don't find
anything, however what we do here is
vital to securing Australia's national
interest," said HMAS Ballarat's SBLT
To put it into perspective, Australia's
north west oil and gas fields includes the
Gorgon Gas Field, located 70 nautical
miles north of Dampier.
The field is estimated to contain 35.3

deployment includes the Five Powers

Shield with support from submarine

South Korea, Japan and Guam.
During her transit from Fremantle to
Singapore, HMAS Ballarat also conduct-
ed a remembrance service for the loss
of HMAS Sydney II, about two nautical
miles from where Sydney II was sunk on
November 19, 1941.
The service, led by Chaplain Barry
Porter and assisted by ship's staff, served
to remember the 645 officers and sail-
ors who perished after Sydney's battle
with the German Commerce Raider HSK
The service was particularly poi-
gnant for ABCK Jasmine Thompson as
her great uncle, CPL Angus Campbell-
McAulay, was one of the 645 men on that
