Perth reaps project rewards

SAILORS on HMAS Perth are reap-
ing the advantages of the changes
made to the ship under Project Sea
1448 Phase 2.
Perth is the first of the Anzac-
class frigates to undergo the anti-ship
missile defence (ASMD) upgrades and
has recently completed all acceptance
trails which began in late February.
The trials were intended to veri-
fy and validate the ASMD capabil-
ity changes in addition to the other
modifications made to enhance FFH
Other engineering and related pro-
jects were also installed.
Following an early operational
assessment, Perth carried out suc-
cessful range activities in the Pacific
Missile Range Facility off Hawaii in
HMAS Perth Commanding Officer
CAPT Mal Wise said undertaking the
changes had been a long road for the
Perth crew, but well worth the effort.
"The crew of Perth can now feel
justifiably proud of the accomplish-
ment of the DMO/Navy/Industry
team," CAPT Wise said.
Changes made under Project Sea
Enclosure of the quarterdeck
increases the ship's reserve
buoyancy, helps bring the
modified FFHs into the 3750-tonne
classification, and makes the ship
safer in higher sea states.
Combined senior sailors' mess:
The former CPO mess is now the
combined mess and includes petty
Garbage management: Installation
of a new garbage management
system was a consequence of the
enclosed quarterdeck and the loss of
the large ventilated space.
Operations room layout/displays/
combat system: At the heart of
the ASMD upgrade is the updated
Mk3E Combat Management System
and redesigned operations room lay-
out, which now provides the com-
mand team with unprecedented
situational awareness and weapon
Navy radar and navigation dis-
play system: The new navigation
fit now comprises two 'Sharpeye'
Infra red search and track: Tw o
IRSTs have been installed in Perth
providing unparalleled situational
Wireless hotspot: A WiFi hot-
spot has been installed on the
ship adding to the previously
fitted internet cafe.
