New team at the top

In other ADF leadership changes,
MAJGEN David Morrison will take up
the job of Chief of Army as incumbent
LTGEN Ken Gillespie prepares to leave
on the same date.
The current Chief of Air Force,
AIRMSHL Mark Binskin, will take
up the position of VCDF vacated by
Chief of Air Force designate AVM
Geoff Brown will be promoted to air
marshal and take up the job of Chief of
LTGEN Hurley said he and the new
leadership team acknowledged their
responsibilities to the government, par-
liament and the people of Australia.
"We are keenly aware that this can
only be achieved through the commit-
ment of the servicemen and women and
their families that we will have the hon-
our to lead," LTGEN Hurley said.
"Our job is to lead these wonderful
Australians and to ensure that their ser-
vice is valued and respected.
"In that vein, on behalf of Mark, Ray,
David and Geoff, I thank our wives, and
our families for their support over many
years, and for their forbearance for the
next three years."
LTGEN Hurley also thanked the
Prime Minister and Defence Minister
for their confidence in the new team and
for the "great honour they have given us,
appointing us the leaders of the ADF".

Meet the new Chief of Navy
RADM Ray Griggs joined the RAN
Reserve in 1978 and entered the RAN
College in 1979.
During his seaman officer training
he served in the aircraft carrier HMAS
Melbourne and HMA ships Yarra and
Advance before spending 12 months
loaned to the Royal Navy in HMS Jersey.
In late 1981 he was posted to
HMAS Per th and deployed to the
North West Indian Ocean in support of
Australia's independent presence in that
region following the Soviet invasion of
From 1983 to 1994 he served as nav-
igating officer of HMA Ships Cessnock,
Torrens, Tobruk, Jervis Bay and Perth.
Ashore he has served in variety of
Between 1995-97 he served as com-
missioning Executive Officer of HMAS
Anzac helping to bring the Anzac-class
frigates into service.
In October 2001 he assumed com-
mand of HMAS Arunta and was immedi-
ately involved in Operation Relex. Arunta
then deployed to the Persian Gulf.
In 2003 he was posted as the Anzac-
class Capability Element Manager and in
2004 studied at the National War College
in Washington D.C. before assuming
command of the Australian Amphibious
Task Group in mid-2005.
He was promoted to commodore in
February 2006 and appointed as the
Deputy Maritime (Fleet) Commander
until assuming the position of Director
General Navy Strategic Policy and
Futures in September 2007.
In February 2008 he was seconded
to the Defence White Paper team and in
early 2009 he attended the UK Higher
Command and Staff Course before being
promoted to rear admiral and appointed
Deputy Head Strategic Reform and
In May 2010 he assumed his current
role as Deputy Chief of Joint Operations.
