From the seas of the South Pacific
to the sands of Tarin Kot and the grassy
fields of France, bugles broke the silence
as the sun rose around the globe on the
96th anniversary of the Anzac landing at
ADF personnel proudly marched
with war veterans along the streets of
Australian cities and towns to honour the
sacrifices of all Australians in uniform.
At a dawn service in Tarin Kot, CDF
ACM Angus Houston said the soldiers at
Gallipoli forged a national identity and a
sprit that continued with Australian ser-
vicemen and women today.
"It was at Gallipoli that Aussies really
showed what they were made of and our
national identity was firmly established,"
the CDF said.
"Though lacking combat experience
and being painfully young, our soldiers
overcame seemingly insurmountable
odds. It was also a time that really
showed the world that Australia as a
nation had come of age.
"I don't go a day without seeing the
spirit of the Anzacs reflected in the men
and women of today's ADF.
"On Anzac Day we demonstrate how

and how highly we value those who are
willing to lay down their lives for our
nation, our people and our values."
