SUBMARINERS know all
about manoeuvring in the water,
which is a good thing when you
are steering a 270kW Holden
Ute around a tarmac rally
course in the rain.
ABAWASM Glen Renshaw
and POAWASM Steve Pfeiffer
proved the underwater sailors
were just as skilled on the surface
when they competed in the 2010
Fabcar One Day Tarmac Rally in
Perth on November 21.
Inspired by the hype around
Army's former street machine
Armygeddon, AB Renshaw and
PO Pfeiffer decided to combine
their passion for motorsport with
some good old-fashioned Navy
promotion and had their Ute
stamped by Navy for the event.
PO Pfeiffer said it was good
to see the public's response to the
Navy sponsored vehicle.
"The team had many positive
comments on the look and pro-
fessionalism displayed and were
proud to have represented the
Navy," PO Pfeiffer said.
The race day began with five
stages at Midvale Speed Dome
where the drivers got accustomed
to their vehicles.
"Nerves were present for both
of us at the start," AB Renshaw
"But we soon got into the
rhythm of racing. By the after-
noon events we were set and the
car just got faster as we gained
confidence in it."
Twelve stages were held at the
Kwinana Motorplex and, thanks
to Navy public relations, the pit
area looked like a scene from
Navy recruiting with a sea of
Navy caps and clothing.
PO Pfeiffer said they were sur-
prised by their result.
"By the end of the event we
had performed above our own
expectations, finishing 15th from a
field of 38 and third in class," PO
"We were competitive in
a field of cars ranging from
Porsches, Mitsubishi EVOs and
Subaru WRXs to Nissan Skylines,
as well as many other makes and
On a day with mixed weather
conditions making the drive a fun
and sometimes hair-raising expe-
rience, the sailors ended the event
with no time penalties, a warm
reception from the public and the
