Do the things you really want to do

IT'S time again to have your say
in the Defence Attitude Survey
-- our senior leaders need to know
what's important to the average
This year, the DAS has changed.
The survey is now being adminis-
tered entirely online to a 10 per cent
random stratified sample three times
a year, instead of annually.
This frequency provides more
up-to-date information and an oppor-
tunity to respond promptly. The DAS
has also been extensively reviewed to
reduce the size of the survey, making
it easier to complete and to ensure
alignment with broader Defence
research and personnel strategies.
The August administration of
the DAS was conducted entirely
online for the first time and yield-
ed improved response rates (Navy

Force 51 per cent and civilians 59
Chief of Navy, VADM Russ
Crane, AM, CSM, RAN said data
from the DAS provided Navy with
evidence to guide personnel policy
development and initiatives designed

"It is also a very valuable feed-
back mechanism for several NGN
culture projects," CN said.
"I would like to thank those
members who took the time to pro-
vide valuable feedback in the August
administration of the DAS.
"Navy has already improved its
response rate and we can expect an
even higher take up rate in October's
survey with the increased awareness
"I encourage all Navy members
who are invited to respond to the
October DAS to take the time to
complete the survey and be candid in
expressing their opinions."
CN said that, along with other
sources of attitudinal information
and personnel data, Navy was able
to ensure that sailors' views, experi-
ences and ideas influenced strategic
The next DAS will be admin-
istered online from October 23 to
November 8, 2009. Participants
will receive an email via their DRN
account inviting them to complete
the DAS online over this period.
Articles on the DAS results are regularly
featured in this paper. The key results
from the 2008 DAS can be downloaded

their say in attitude survey
HAVE YOUR SAY!: RAN personnel like HMAS Ballarat's SBLT Travis Kemsley,
ABMT Adam Martin and ABBM Phillip Secomb are being encouraged to com-
plete the Defence Attitude Survey if they are selected to participate later this
month and in November. CN says sharing your views can really help influence
strategic decision-making processes.

Change to Individual Readiness
Reference: DI(N) PERS 31-46
CURRENTLY members are required
to advise their availability on an annual
basis. This is an administrative burden
and a waste of resources.
In line with NGN principles, the
Chief of Navy, VADM Russ Crane, AM,
CSM, RAN, has approved an amendment
to the reference to enable availability to
be reported by exception.
This means members will be con-
sidered available to deploy unless they
advise their CO otherwise.
This change is effective immediately.
PMKeyS has been updated and the
revised DI(N) published.
